A Black head coach is set to compete for the FBS national championship title for the first time in history.

On Thursday (January 2), head coach Marcus Freeman and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish punched their ticket to the semifinals of the College Football Playoffs with a decisive victory against the Georgia Bulldogs in the quarterfinal game.

Freeman's team will compete against James Franklins' Penn State Nittany Lions next week in the Orange Bowl for a spot in the national championship game. With two Black coaches facing off in the semifinals, history is bound to be made in the FBS. It will be the first time a Black head coach will lead a team in the national championship.

Following Notre Dame's win on Thursday, Freeman highlighted the significance of two Black head coaches squaring off in the semifinal game.

Freeman, noting he was "grateful," said the feat was “a reminder that you are a representation for many others and many of our players that look the same way I do," per NewsOne.

The winner of the Orange Bowl will go on to compete in the title game against the Texas Longhorns or the Ohio State Buckeyes. Those two teams are facing off next week at the Cotton Bowl in Arlington, Texas.

The national championship game, which will make history featuring a Black head coach, is set for January 20 in Atlanta, Georgia.
