A Chicago mother was fatally shot in the face just moments after dropping off her son at school, per WGN.

The fatal shooting of 31-year-old Romeca Meeks unfolded on Monday (September 8) following a confrontation at around 9 a.m. near a school in the South Loop. Authorities said the dispute appeared to be domestic-related.

According to witnesses, Meeks was ambushed in a heated altercation involving her child's father and another woman who was reportedly his current girlfriend. The second woman reportedly pulled out a gun and shot Meeks at close range, striking her in the face.

Meeks was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police said the alleged shooter was taken into custody at the scene. Charges hadn't been filed as of Tuesday (September 9), and authorities haven't released her name to the public.

Videos of the shooting show one woman saying, “She shot her! I saw her put the gun in the car!” Another woman is heard yelling that a man had Meeks in a headlock before the shot was fired. In one clip, the woman who allegedly fired the shot says, “I’m licensed to carry.”

Just hours before her death, Meeks packed a handwritten note in her son’s lunchbox that read: “You can start off strong. Always remain yourself. You’re the coolest, smartest, and funniest kid I know. I love you so much, and you make me so proud. Have a great day. Mommy loves you!!! Love, Mommy.”

The message was signed with love from "Mommy" and marked the day as a "fresh start."

Police are continuing to investigate the shooting.
