The efforts to find survivors in the rubble of the collapsed condo in Florida are officially over. On Wednesday, officials announced that rescue efforts had shifted to recovery, acknowledging that after almost two weeks, the chance of finding survivors was gone.
In a private briefing with the families of the missing, Assistant Chief Ray Jadallah of the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said, "Just based on the facts, there's zero chance of survival."
By Wednesday evening, the death toll was up to 54, with as many as 86 others still missing.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said, "We have all asked God for a miracle. So the decision to transition from rescue to recovery is an extremely difficult one.” (The New York Times)
